Frequently Asked Questions

General

Is ChronoTracer an e-discovery platform?

No. ChronoTracer works alongside your existing e-discovery tools and supercharges your ability to understand the facts of your case. E-discovery platforms manage documents as documents, while ChronoTracer manages the contents of documents. For example, in an e-discovery system, a phone bill is a single record, while in ChronoTracer, the same phone bill can generate hundreds of thousands of individual phone calls and text message events.

What types of evidence does ChronoTracer handle?

Nearly any type of evidence. ChronoTracer imports data from e-discovery productions, forensic device images, cloud accounts, native email files and other computer logs. It supports various data types, including:

  • emails in numerous formats (including .eml, .msg, .imf, .pst and .txt)
  • text messages (including iMessage, SMS, MMS, WhatsApp and Signal)
  • phone records from all major telco providers (and some minor ones)
  • voicemails and voice memos
  • video conference logs
  • social media posts
  • government records like SEC Edgar filings
  • photos and videos
  • privilege logs
  • other computer logs, and much more

How does ChronoTracer extract chronologies?

Customers provide their evidence to the ChronoTracer team, who load it and run our deterministic processing pipeline. The pipeline processes documents using purpose-built code to identify and extract events, including event type, dates and times, participant identifiers, content, and source citations. The result is a normalized database of structured events hosted in a secure, single-tenant environment. Given the same input, the pipeline produces the same output every time.

How do I get back to the source document?

Users can get back to the original source document from the chronology interface with a single click. Documents are also identified with Bates numbers, where available, to make it easy to cross-reference documents in your e-discovery system or to discuss the documents with third parties.

Security & Integrations

Is ChronoTracer secure?

ChronoTracer is a secure platform that consolidates diverse datasets from different sources and in different formats into a secure, unified database. ChronoTracer is hosted on enterprise-grade infrastructure and has successfully completed a SOC 2 Type II audit conducted by an independent third-party auditor, with no exceptions. Each case runs in its own logically isolated environment. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. The platform uses robust security controls to keep your data secure, private, and fully under your control.

Does ChronoTracer integrate with Relativity/Logikcull/CS Disco/Reveal etc.?

ChronoTracer does not need to integrate or connect to e-discovery platforms. It ingests and leverages the data from any e-discovery platform or other source via encrypted file share to create searchable, filterable case chronologies.

Value & ROI

Who should use ChronoTracer?

ChronoTracer is built for teams handling complex, evidence-heavy matters, from litigation boutiques to large global law firms to forensic investigations consultancies and government agencies.

How much attorney time can ChronoTracer save?

Depending on the case, ChronoTracer can save teams hundreds to thousands of hours in attorney and paralegal time building manual case chronologies and answering factual questions about their evidence. ChronoTracer turns chronology projects that used to take hours, days or weeks into simple queries that return results in seconds. Most importantly, ChronoTracer’s incredible efficiency enables firms to take on matters they otherwise could not, enhancing client outcomes.

My case has a lot of evidence. Can ChronoTracer handle it?

Yes. ChronoTracer has processed cases with tens of millions of pages of discovery that have included more than 25 million text messages, emails, phone calls and more. We are constantly optimizing and tuning the system to scale for the largest, most complex matters.

AI Features

What are ChronoTracer’s AI features?

ChronoTracer’s AI assistant lets users ask questions about their evidence in plain language. The AI queries the structured event database produced by the deterministic pipeline and returns actual events with source citations. It can break complex questions into multiple steps and use internal tools to filter, search, cross-reference, and sequence events. The AI also forms keyword searches, Boolean queries, and complex filter combinations on behalf of the user, translating a plain-language question into the right combination behind the scenes.

How does ChronoTracer’s AI differ from other AI-powered legal technology tools?

Most AI-powered legal technology tools use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to let users “chat with their documents.” The AI retrieves document fragments and generates a response. ChronoTracer takes a fundamentally different approach: a deterministic pipeline first restructures your evidence into a structured event database, and then the AI queries that database. This means the AI returns actual events with real metadata and source citations, not generated text. The deterministic foundation is verifiable and repeatable. The AI layer sits on top, adding flexibility and natural language interaction without introducing hallucination risk into the evidence itself.

How does the AI work with manual filters?

The AI and manual filters are complementary, not competing. Users can start an inquiry with the AI, use manual filters to refine further (by event type, participant, date range, and other criteria), and then go back to the AI with follow-up questions on the filtered set. For teams with established filter workflows, the AI extends those workflows rather than replacing them.

Getting Started

Do I need training to use ChronoTracer?

ChronoTracer’s simple control panel makes it possible to filter and search events as easily as searching Airbnb or Zillow and requires less than one hour of training.

How quickly can I be up and running?

While it depends on the quantity and variety of evidence in your case, for most common evidence types, we can turn-around a fully functional ChronoTracer environment within a business week.
